Monomaterials and monopackaging in circular economy

What is monopackaging?

In many containers and packaging that we know, different and multiple pieces are used: content bodies, closures and lids, information labels, at least, they have been manufactured from different materials, making their recycling process extremely difficult.

In a circular economy, the entire cycle of a product must be measured and thought for the reintroduction of the material into the material flow. The European Union must achieve a more circular economy, based on high quality reuse and recycling and much less on the use of primary raw materials.

This need to redefine the concept of waste gives rise to the notion of monopackaging or monomaterial packaging. Monomaterial packaging is produced and formed in all its components based on a single raw material.

Its advantages are multiple:

  • It allows creating in a single process.
  • Simplify the packaging process.
  • Reduces production and handling costs.
  • Reduces the need for new resources.
  • Helps in selective separation for producers and consumers.
  • Facilitates complete recycling without added costs.
  • The recycling chain is streamlined and cost-saving.
  • Increase the recycling volume.

Cardboard boxes and gummed paper in mono-packaging concept

The paper and cardboard boxes in the packaging are protagonists. Forecasts show that the demand for paper and cardboard will grow to 490 million tons in 2030 in the world; Europe represents 22% of the world consumption of paper and cardboard. The European paper and cardboard industry aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% and to reach 74% recycling by 2020. In some countries such as Italy and Benelux, recycled paper and cardboard are no longer considered waste, but raw material.

The recycling of paper and cardboard brings benefits not only environmental, but also social and economic:

  1. The manufacture of paper and cardboard from recycled material saves 70% of energy.
  2. Each ton of recycled paper and cardboard saves the equivalent of between 12 and 30 trees.
  3. Recycled material supplies the paper and cardboard industry with 69% of the resources it uses.
  4. Generates many jobs.

Not only the legislation, but also the consumer is putting more and more emphasis on sustainability and environmental protection when making their purchases, they realize that it is already indispensable. And companies recognize and adapt their processes to this trend.

In this context, sealing cardboard boxes with gummed kraft paper is the optimal option, the achievement and strict compliance of the single-pack concept, with all the advantages mentioned above, and it is key to the path to a circular economy.
